How to join colors in this pattern

In this pattern we use a new color for each row.o

1. Join each color with a slip stitch, 
2. Work 1sc, over the slip stitch to secure the yarn, this completes the join.
3. The join counts as the first chain ,
4. then work the remainder of the required first chain as indicated in the pattern.

For example,  

• add 2ch if you require a 2ch start for hdc
• ch2 if you require a 3ch for a dc start.
