Flower Granny Square Blanket -African Patchwork Afghan - Free Crochet Pattern

African Flowers Patchwork is a large crochet afghan and this blanket incorporates flower squares designed by me to pay tribute to the beauty of my country. Each crochet flower square is inspired by the flowers that bloom in my native country South Africa. In total, this afghan consists of eight different flower granny squares, four large squares, and 4 small squares, each with a unique style, I am forever grateful to be living in such a beautiful country, we are surrounded by so much natural beauty.

Nature has always been my biggest inspiration when making crochet blankets, and with the natural abundance of colors, I have been able to find encouragement to capture the beauty of each flower. This example afghan is made up of a multitude of bold and bright colors, so don't be afraid to use your favorite colors when creating the beautiful heirloom blanket.

Tips for making this free flower granny square blanket

This blanket is large and a yarn stash buster, so select a yarn that you enjoy working with and which is also easily accessible squares. I always try to write a pattern that is suitable for most yarns, as certain yarns might not always be accessible to everyone, I don't promote yarn, I want to share my love for design and pattern making so I always try to make the pattern as universal as possible so it can be enjoyed by many.
Select a yarn that works best with your favorite crochet hook, as you will make a lot of squares.

Use your favorite yarn colors, and be bright and bold with your choices, this pattern does not include a color chart, the color choice for your blanket is completely your choice.

Take your time and enjoy every moment of every square, large blankets are never a sprint race but a marathon and should be savored. Be proud of every square you have completed and share your work. I love to see the process and love hearing feedback, so share and tag me in your process.

I enjoy making crochet granny squares in the warmer months like spring and supper, and then when fall comes around one can then start to join the blanket, so it's ready to be cozied up with in winter.

Materials required for crochet project

I add these pattern requirements as a simple guide to what I have used in the example pattern as well as some suggestions that I might think will work if the required materials are not obtainable. I often get requests on what yarn I have used and what color, so I hope this section helps.

    what you need for crochet

Lets start with the basics :

    • Yarn
    • Crochet
    • Scissors
    • Yarn Needle
    • Stitch markers

Well, first off you will need some yarn in your favorite colors!

I recommend lightweight DK (double -knit) yarn, in the yarn fiber of your choice.

Acrylic, cotton, wool, the choice is yours but best to stick to the weight of category 3 or 4 , using a crochet hook between 3.5 to 4.5mm to get close to the final finished size of the afghan.

The yarn I used in the afghan example is 100% Cotton, has about 130 yds/119m per 1.75oz/50g skein/ball and I used about 50 x skeins/balls for this project

The above-mentioned yarn is not a requirement for the pattern, you can use any yarn of your choice.

    Suggestions for yarn substitutions

This pattern is a stash buster so pick a yarn that you enjoy working with, cotton yarns might always not be the most cost-effective when it comes to large projects like blankets and afghans, but please don't let this stop you, there are a huge selection of lightweight DK yarn out there that is sure to match your preference and pocket.

Just note that using a smaller category yarn and a smaller hook, the blocks and blanket size will overall be smaller, and using a higher category yarn like 5 to 6 is heavier yarn and larger hook, the squares will be larger and the overall blanket size will be larger.

I prefer a lightweight yarn, as this makes the blanket not too heavy, but the final choice is simply your preference.

    Crochet Hooks

The final blanket size and crochet square sizes are based on the pattern being worked in 3.5 mm / US 4 / E-4 crochet hook

Always ensure that your crochet hook works with your selected yarn, and that you stick to the same yarn and same hook size , on all squares.

    What else will you need?

These are all squares which are worked in the round, each row has the possibility to be a different color, so be prepared to work in ends, and perhaps a few,... no .. a lot of them.

    Weaving in ends tip !!

Try and work your ends in as you go, that way, you have way fewer ends to work away when it comes to combining your squares.
When finishing off a row, leave a longer tail when cutting the yarn, after finishing a row and fastening off.

Then work in the tail underneath the beginning stitch of the next row, to the point that only a small tail sticks out, I then simply pull the embedded taIl slightly tight and cut the end off.

    Crochet Hook required for pattern

The example pattern uses a: 3.5 mm / US 4 /E-4 fo the example yarn used.
But feel free to use the hook that suits your preferred yarn.

    Tension
I would suggest sticking to the same hook and yarn across all Blocks and when joining, as this will ensure that all your Blocks match up.
