Gazania Flower Square crochet pattern

Difficulty level: Intermediate

Skills required:

  • Understand the basics of working in the round.
  • You should be able to understand the basics of joining different yarn colors and how to end and finish rows.
  • This online version of this pattern is not a step-by-step tutorial, if you wish to get a more detailed version feel free to purchase the photo tutorial / pattern on any of the listed platforms.

Techniques used:

  • All crochet squares are worked in the round, check that your final row count per side is correct or you will struggle to join your crochet squares at a later stage.
  • Gauge can be important, it's best to stick to the same yarn weight and crochet hook thru-out making your squares or your squares would not match up.
  • Work ends, as you go will help you at the end when it comes to finishing the blanket unless you love spending a day at least to work on loose ends.

Note for all squares

Ensure that each side of a square has the required stitch count, according to the pattern instruction count, this will ensure that jo ining your squares will be simple and straightforward.

Materials required for crochet project

I add these pattern requirements as a simple guide to what I have used in the example pattern as well as some suggestions that I might think will work if the required materials are not obtainable. I often get requests on what yarn I have used and what color, so I hope this section helps.

Yarn used in this pattern example is lightweight DK yarn. I prefer working with cotton , my preferred yarn each has an average length of 130 yds/119m per 1.75oz/50g skein/ball.

Recommended yarn for similar to finish square size is : a lightweight double knitting yarn, some crochet councils refer to this yarn as the 3/Light category. In Europe and Australia, you might see DK yarn labeled as 8-ply.

You can use any yarn of your choice, just note that by using lighter yarn and a smaller crochet hook, finished square and blanket size will be overall smaller. Using a heavier yarn and larger crochet hook, the finished size of squares and blanket will be larger.

    Crochet Hooks
The crochet granny square example pattern was worked up in a: 3.5 mm / US 4 /E-4 crochet hook.
