Quick tips and tricks for small crochet squares

All crochet squares are worked in the round, ensure that your final row count per side is correct or you will struggle to join your block at a late stage.
Gauge is not essential, but it's best to stick to the same yarn weight and crochet hook throughout making your squares, or your squares will not match up.
Work ends, as you go will help you at the end when it comes to finishing the blanket unless you love spending a day at least to work on loose ends.
Ensure that each side of a square has the required stitch count, according to the pattern instruction count, this will ensure that joining your squares will be simple.
Basic Skills required for making small crochet squares

Understand the basics of working in the round.

  • Joining different yarn colors.
  • How to end and finish rows.
  • Being able to read and understand the basic written patterns as the abbreviations associated with patterns
  • It helps to have the ability to read and understand a stitch diagram, especially if it's an advanced design

Materials required for crochet project

I add these pattern requirements as a simple guide to what I have used in the example pattern as well as some suggestions that I might think will work if the required materials are not obtainable. I often get requests on what yarn I have used and what color, so I hope this section helps.

    Materials used in example
    DK 100% Cotton Yarn

    100% Cotton; 130 yds/119m per 1.75oz/50g skein/ball

50 skeins/balls used in this project

The above-mentioned yarn is not a requirement for the pattern, you can use any yarn of your choice, just note that using more lightweight yarn and smaller hook, the Blocks and blanket size will be overall smaller, and using a heavier yarn and larger hook, the squares will be larger and the overall blanket size will be larger.

    Suggestions for yarn substitutions:
This pattern is a stash buster so pick a yarn that you enjoy working with.
I prefer a lightweight yarn, as this makes the blanket not too heavy, but the final choice is simply your preference. The final blanket size and Block sizes are based on the pattern being worked in 3.5 mm / US 4 /E-4 hook.

    Hooks
Example pattern uses a: 3.5 mm / US 4 /E-4 fo the example yarn used.

But feel free to use the hook that suits your preferred yarn.
