Skills required : 

Know the basics of single, half double and double crochet stitch in US Crochet Terminology

Techniques used : 

Work in the round, keep track of your stitch counts per round, ensure that the final count around your small smile squares are all the same.

Pattern size is based on working with a 3mm crochet hook and double knit cotton yarn, please note that using a smaller or bigger crochet hook, will change the final size of your crochet bucket hat.

 

Materials used in the project

Crochet Hook : 3mm / D3 
Double knit craft cotton in colors : 
Pear Green (200 m / 220 yard)
Sunshine Yellow (100 m / 110 yards )

Crochet Hook: 2.5mm / C2 
Black yarn for eyes & smile see pattern note for more

The pattern is written in US terminology English.

Tension

Worked in the round

Smiley Face small square:

6 x rounds increments op 10 sts per round of half double crochet stitches 3.5 inches / 9 cm square

Brim :

3 x rounds of 1dc stitch in each st + 1 x round of 1 hdc stitch in each st 2 inches / 5 cm

Hat crown - Diameter :

8 x rounds of mixed dc & hdc rounds - see pattern instructions for more 6.75 inches / 16.5 cm

Small crochet squares join to make the side panel of the hat. Please take note of rounds worked on top and bottom of the side panel of the hat. The Crown of the hat is worked as a separate panel and joined to the side panel of the hat. The rim is then joined to the bottom side panel of the hat.

Smiley Face Square - Make 5

Start with magic ring

Round 1

Work 1 sc into magic ring, chain2 counts as first hdc st, 11 hdc sts into the same magic ring, join with slip stitch in top of starting chain stitch, ch1, (12 hdc sts in magic ring )

Round 2

RS - work right site facing front, ch1, counts as first hdc stitch of round, 2 hdc into next stitch, * 1 hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch, repeat from * until end of round, join with slip stitch in top of start chain, chain 1, (24 hdc sts)

RS - work right site facing front, ch1, counts as first hdc stitch of round, 1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc into next stitch, * 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches , 2hdc in next stitch, repeat from * until end of round, join with slip stitch in top of start chain, chain 1, (36 hdc sts)

 Round 4

RS - work right site facing front, ch1, counts as first hdc stitch of round, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2 hdc into next stitch, * 1 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches , 2hdc in next stitch, repeat from * until the end of round, join with a slip stitch on top of the start chain. (48 hdc sts)
Finish off color, work in the end.

RS - work right site facing front, join new color with sc stitch, ch3, counts as first dc stitch of round, 1 dc next stitch, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 4 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch2,
* 1 dc next 2 stitches, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 4 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch2, repeat from * twice more to complete the sides of the square,  join with slip stitch on top of start chain, ch 1,

Round 6

RS - work right site facing front, ch2, counts as first hdc stitch of round in 2ch-sp, 1 hdc into same ch-sp,
1 hdc into the next 12 hdc sts, * 2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc in ch-sp, 1 hdc into the next 12 hdc sts, repeat from * for rest of sides until first ch-sp, work 2 hdc into ch-sp, ch 2,  join with slip stitch on top of start chain. Finish off color, work in ends (16 hdc sts per side, ch2)

RS - work right site facing front, ch2, counts as first hdc stitch of round in 2ch-sp, 1 hdc into same ch-sp,
1 hdc into the next 16 hdc sts, * 2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc in ch-sp, 1 hdc into the next 16 hdc sts, repeat from * for rest of sides until first ch-sp, work 2 hdc into ch-sp, ch 2,  join with slip stitch on top of start chain. Finish off color, work in ends (20 hdc sts per side, ch2)

Round 8 (  Large Sized Bucket Hat )

RS - work right site facing front, ch2, counts as first hdc stitch of round in 2ch-sp, 1 hdc into same ch-sp,
1 hdc into the next 20 hdc sts, * 2hdc, ch2, 2 hdc in ch-sp, 1 hdc into the next 20 hdc sts, repeat from * for rest of sides until first ch-sp, work 2 hdc into ch-sp, ch 2,  join with slip stitch on top of start chain. Finish off color, work in ends (24 hdc sts per side, ch2)

Eyes and Smile

Use a smaller crochet hook , I suggest a 2.5mm 

Eye{s) Make 2 for each small square

Start with a magic ring, 1 sc into magic ring, ch1, counts as first hdc stitch, 9 hdc sts into the same magic ring,  pull the tail tight, and finish off the yarn.

Join the the squares into side of bucket hat

Join two squares using a yarn needle and yarn, and stitch two squares together using a simple blanket stitch. 
Add the Eyes to each circle within each square, and add the smile with slip stitches into the stitches of the circle.
Work on a row of 1 hdc into each stitch and join around the top and bottom of the bucket hat side.

Join the crown to the sides of the hat

365 Calendar blanket pattern

Turn the side of the hat inside out.
Turn the top ground circle also inside out, 
Join the two panels wrong side facing out with a half double crochet stitch into each of the stitches of the crown and the rim.

Turn hat right side front and make the rim.

Make the rim of the hat.

Round 1

RS - Right side facing front, join yarn with sc, ch2, counts as first dc st, * 1 dc into each stitch around,  join in top of staring chain, ch1,

Round 2

Ch2, counts as first dc st, 1 dc in the next 3 sts, 2 dc into the next stitch,  * 1 dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc into the next stitch, repeat from *, join in top of staring chain, ch1,

Round 3 & 4 

You can work as many rounds as you want to determine the length you require for your final rim. 

RS - ch2, counts as first dc st, * 1 dc into each stitch around,  join in top of staring chain, ch1,

Last Round 

RS - Right side facing front, ch1, counts as first hdc st, * 1 hdc into each stitch around,  join in top of staring chain, finish off color and work in ends.
