The basic pattern involves crocheting clusters of double crochet stitches in rounds, with chain spaces between the clusters. As you complete each round, you'll see the hexagon shape start to emerge, with the hole in the center getting smaller and smaller. Feel free to play around with different color combinations to create eye-catching designs. You can make each round a different color for a rainbow effect, alternate between two colors for a bold geometric look, or use several shades of the same color for an ombre style. Hexagon granny squares are incredibly versatile - you can keep them as small coasters or trivets, or connect a bunch of them to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind blanket or throw. No matter what you decide to make with them, crocheting these classic granny squares is a wonderful way to relax and express your creativity.

How to Crochet Hexagon Granny Squares

Choosing Your Yarn

  • Select a medium-weight yarn (worsted weight or DK weight)
  • Choose a yarn with good stitch definition, such as 100% cotton or acrylic
  • Pick 2-3 complementary colors for your squares

Crochet Skill Level

  • Hexagon granny squares are an intermediate crochet project
  • Familiarity with basic crochet stitches like the chain, single crochet, and double crochet is required
  • Beginners may want to start with a simpler granny square pattern first

Sizing Your Hexagon Squares

  • Typical hexagon granny squares measure 6-8 inches across
  • The final size will depend on your yarn weight and crochet tension
  • Make a gauge swatch to determine your square size

Increasing or Decreasing Square Size

  •  Add or remove rounds to make the squares larger or smaller
  • Work more or fewer clusters in each round to adjust the size
