Protea Flower Crochet Hexagon Square Pattern Instructions

This pattern is written and charted using standard US crochet terminology.

Materials used in protea flower crochet hexagon square
Yarn weight: DK - Double Knit Yarn
Crochet hook size: 3.5mm
Yarn length required: 600m / 545 yards to complete squares 3 to 4
Finished measurement of each hexagon protea flower square: 23 x 23 cm / 9 x 9 inches

Skills required

Understand the basics of working in the round.
Joining different yarn colors and how to end and finish rows.

Techniques 

Gauge:  stick to the same yarn weight and crochet hook throughout making your squares, or your squares will not match up.
Work in the end, as you go will help you at the end when it comes to finishing the blanket unless you love spending a day at least to work on loose ends.

The pattern is worked in the round with (RS) right side facing front.

sk: skip
sl: slip stitch
sp: space
st: stitch
sts(s): stitches
tr: treble crochet
V-st: 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc into the same stitch
FPdc-Vsts: front post double crochet v-stitch

Start with a magic ring,
Round 1

Ch3 counts as the first dc st, 1dc. 11 more times into the same space,  join with sl into the top of starting chain stitch, ch1, don't finish off color.
(12 x 1dc sts in the magic ring)

Round 2

ch 2, counts as first dc, 1fpdc around post of next dc stitch, * 1 dc into space between the last worked dc and the next dc, 1 fpdc around post of next dc st, repeat from * around, join into the top of start ch with sl, finish off color. 
(12 x (1dc in sp, 1fpdc round next post)

Round 3

Join new color in space between fpdc st, and dc st with sc stitch, ch 3, counts as first dc, 1fpdc around post of next dc stitch, * 1 dc into space between the last worked dc and the next dc, 1 fpdc around post of next dc st, 
repeat from * around,  join into the top of start ch with sl, finish off color. 
(24 x (1dc in sp, 1fpdc round next post)

Round 4

Join new color around post of dc stitch, ch3, counts as first fpdc st, * 1 fpdc around post of next dc st, 
repeat from * around,  join with sl into top of ch 3, finish off color. 
(48 x (1fpdc round dc post)

Round 5

Join new color in any stitch from the round before, *1 sc in stitch, ch2, 2 dc into the same st as sc before, skip two st(s), repeat from * around, join with sl into sc, finish off color.
(16 x  1sc, ch2, 2dc in same st, sk2 )

Round 6

Join color in 2 ch-sp between any two dc st(s), ch 3, counts as first dc, 2 dc into the same sp, ch 1. 
Skip over the next two stitches,  * 3 dc into top of next 2 ch-sp, ch-1, skip over next two stitches, repeat from * rnd, join with sl into the top of first 3 ch, finish off color. 
(16 x  3dc in 2ch-sp, sk2 sts )

Round 7

Join new color around 2ch-sp post of round 5, ch4, counts as first dc stitch and ch1, 1 fpdc around the same post, ch1,1 sc in space between 3dc sts from round 6, ch1,* 1fpdc, round 2ch-sp post from round5, ch1, 1 fpdc around same post, ch1, 1 sc in space between 3dc sts from round 6, ch1, repeat from * around, join with sl into top op starting ch3, finish off color. 
(16 x  1fpdc, ch1,1fpdc, 1 sc in space )

Round 8

Join new color with sc into sc, * 1 sc into sc, skip fpdc stitch, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in 1 ch-sp, skip next 1fpdc st, repeat from * around,  join with sl into first sc stitch.  Finish off the color.

Join new color round first post of 4dc-shell,ch 3, counts as first 1 FPdc, 1 dc in 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, 1 dc into 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, 1 dc in 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, ch1,
* 1 FPdc, 1 dc in 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, 1 dc into 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, 1 dc in 1 ch-sp, 1 FPdc around dc post, ch1, repeat from * around,  join with sl into top of ch 3, finish off color.
