Quick tips and tricks for small crochet squares

All crochet squares are worked in the round, ensure that your final row count per side is correct or you will struggle to join your block at a late stage.
Gauge is not essential, but it's best to stick to the same yarn weight and crochet hook throughout making your squares, or your squares will not match up.
Work ends, as you go will help you at the end when it comes to finishing the blanket unless you love spending a day at least to work on loose ends.
Ensure that each side of a square has the required stitch count, according to the pattern instruction count, this will ensure that joining your squares will be simple.

The pattern is not a step-by-step tutorial, per-round images are available as well as a stitch diagram

What you might need for completing this project

I add these pattern requirements as a simple guide to what I have used in the example pattern as well as some suggestions that I might think will work if the required materials are not obtainable. I often get requests on what yarn I have used and what color, so I hope this section helps.

Recommended Yarn for this project:

Lightweight yarn like DK yarn, or double knitting yarn, or referred to by some crochet councils as the 3/Light category. You might see DK yarn labeled as 8-ply yarn in Europe and Australia.

You can use any yarn of your choice, just note that by using lighter yarn and a smaller one, each square and blanket size will be overall smaller, by using a heavier yarn and larger hook, the squares will be larger and the overall blanket size will be bigger.

Hooks

The example pattern uses a: 3.5 mm / US 4 /E-4 fo the example yarn.
But feel free to use the hook that suits your preferred yarn.

This pattern is written and charted using standard US crochet terminology.

Pattern Instructions

Weaving in ends Tip !!
Try and work your ends in as you go, that way, you have way fewer ends to work away when it comes to combining your squares.
When finishing off a row, I tend to leave a longer tail when cutting the yarn, after finishing a row and fastening off.
With the next row, I then work in the tail underneath the beginning stitch of the next row, to the point that only a small tail sticks out, I then simply pull the embedded tal slightly tight and cut the end off, - and that makes working on a lot of squares a lot easier.

Row 1

Sc, ch 3 into magic ring counts as first dc, make 15 more dc sts into magic ring, join with sl into the top of ch, finish off color.
(16 x dc st(s))
Row 2

Join color in dc, * 1 sc in dc, ch 3, sk next 1dc st, rep from * around, join with sl into the top of ch 4, finish off color.
(8 x dc, ch 1, FPdc, ch - st(s))

Row 3

Join color in skipped dc from round 2. ch 6, counts as *1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr into the same skipped dc from row 2, BPsc, round next dc post from round 2, rep from * around, join with sl into top of starting chain, finish off color.
(8 x tr-Vst, BPsc )

Row 4

Join new color in 2 ch-sp, * 1 hdc into 2 ch-sp, 1 puff st, round Bpsc, ch 1, rep from * around, join with sl into top of FPdc, finish off color
.(8 x 1hdc, 1 puff st))

Row 5

Join color round puff st from round 4, * 1 FPhdc round puff, 3 hdc into 1 ch-sp, 1 BPsc round sc, 3 hdc into next 1 ch-sp, rep from * around, join with sl into the of FPhdc, finish off color.

Row 6

Join color in hdc from puff st from round 4, 1 sc in Fphdc, skip 3 hdc sts, 6 dc sts in BPsc st, skip next 3 hdc sts, * around, join with sl into the top of hdc, finish off color.

Row 7

Join new color in sc, 1 Fphdc round sc, BLO, 1 sc st, in each dc st from 6dc-shell, join with sl into top of Fphdc, finish off color.

Row 8

Join new color in sp before, Fphdc,* 2 dctog, ch 1, 2 dctog, into space before FPdc, ch 2, 2 dctog, ch 1, 2 dctog in sp after FPdc, ch 4, 1 FPhdc round FPdhc, ch 4, repeat from * 3 times more round, to form square, join with sl into top of 2 dctog, finish off color)

Row 9

Join new color into corner 2 ch-sp,* 2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc into corner 2 ch-sp, 1 Fphdc round 2dctog, 1 hdc in next 1 ch-sp, 1 Fphdc round next 2dctog, working in hdc stitches from row 4, skip first hdc st ,1 hdc into next 5 hdc sts, 1 fphdc around Fphd from row 5, working in hdc stitches from row 4, 1 hdc into next 5 hdc sts, skip last hdc st , 1 Fphdc round 2dctog, 1 hdc in next 1 chsp, 1 Fphdc round next 2dctog, from row 5, repeat from * 3 times more round, to form a square, join with sl into starting hdc stitch, finish off color.

Yarn suggestions :

Cotton yarns might always not be the most cost-effective when it comes to large projects like blankets and afghans, but please don't let this stop you, there is a huge selection of DK Acrylic Yarns out there that is sure to match your preference and pocket. I prefer a lightweight yarn, as this makes the blanket not too heavy, but the final choice is simply your preference.

Crochet Hooks

Always ensure that your crochet hook works with your selected yarn.

Your crochet hook should always be determined by what is recommended by the yarn label. If your looking to make an item that needs a stronger fabric, use a half to one size smaller, if you are looking to make a loose-fitting item, perhaps try a half-size thicker hook. but you will determine the tension you need once you have completed one square, rather than having to frog an entire cardigan or sweater.

What else will you need?

Some scissors and needles, do note that these are all squares which are worked in the round, and each row can be a different color, so be prepared to work in ends, and perhaps a few,... no .. a lot of them.
