What is the best yarn to make a flower granny square blanket?
I strongly suggest a medium-weighted yarn also known as worsted or Aran yarn, often referred to as 8ply yarn in Australia.
Crochet flowers are worked in the round and are made up with a combination of double crochet, V stitches crochet, classic granny square stitch, and half double crochet stitches.
Make a colorful square blanket by using a variety of colored yarn balls.
What stitches are used to join the crochet squares?
The large crochet squares are joined with 3 different crochet joining techniques, the first large squares are joined using crochet v stitch joined together, the second join is using single crochet stitches to join the small crochet flower squares and the last join uses half double crochet stitches. Each join stitch technique gives a unique final stitch and adds beautiful detail to the final flower square blanket.
Why is my crochet granny square not flat ?
Loosen your crochet tension or use a bigger hook size recommended for your yarn.
Why is my crochet granny square flaring and rippling?
Your tension can be too loose, try tightening your tension or perhaps use a smaller crochet hook recommended for your yarn.
Should I block my granny squares?
You can easily block your granny squares before joining them tighter. By blocking your crochet squares you ensure that all your squares are the same and this makes quick work of joining your squares.
If you like me and are used to making granny squares and all your squares end up squared and the same size you can just go ahead and join your squares without blocking them.
Can I use a larger crochet hook and heavier-weight yarn other than what the pattern indicates?
Yes, you can easily use a heavier weighted yarn and a larger crochet hook, this lapghan pattern can easily be worked in any yarn of your choice, take note of the crochet hook size noted on your yarn label. If your favorite yarn requires a 5mm crochet hook instead of a 4, do note that your crochet flower squares will be larger overall which means your final blanket size will be larger overall.
I must stress not to change crochet hook sizes between squares as your squares will end up being different sizes. By stopping between crochet hook sizes your tension will also be very different and even if you try blocking them the same size, they will still be different sizes and will affect the look of your final blanket.
