Mixed stitched crochet baby blanket pattern

Different stitch pattern per round row makes for interesting textures and using a kaleidoscope of color makes this a fun project.

The pattern specifies a 4mm yarn hook for the gauge and finished size, but not any of this is set in stone. Use a larger yarn hook with a thicker / heavier  yarn and your blanket will be bigger. If it's bigger then it's perfect for that sports or game day, to protect your cheeks from a frosty seat.

This crochet pattern is worked in the round, like an old school granny square blanket, but with a modern twist , ending up in a rectangle rather than a square. No more worrying if your blanket is not going to come out straight.

This is a free condenced online version of this pattern. The ad-free PDF version is packed with written instructions, per row stitch diagrams and a full stith diagram and is available at a small fee.

Materials required for crochet project

I add these pattern requirements as a simple guide to what I have used in the example pattern as well as some suggestions that I might think will work if the required materials are not obtainable. I often get requests on what yarn I have used and what color, so I hope this section helps.

    • Loads of add balls and scarp yarn , from your leftover projects
    • Crochet hooks
    • Yarn needle to work in your ends
    • Some scissors to cut worked in tails
    • Stitch markers of you feel the need for them

Start your pattern of with your smallest ball of scrap yarn and add your bigger balls of yarn as you go along.

Materials used in the blanket pattern

Yarn used in example: Double Knit also known as DK Yarn.
I used approx 15 skeins of a length of 120 meters per skein, this was made up of scrap yarn balls, so I am trying my best to give a ballpark figure of the amount of yarn used.

The Crochet Hook used for the pattern example is 4mm (G-6), if you using other types of yarn, please use the recommended yarn hook as specified on the yarn label.

If you feel more comfortable using stitch markers to make your life easier, you can include this in your material list but in not a necessity.

You will also need the normal items like a yarn needle to work in ends as well as some scissors to cut of the yarn tails when changing colors per rounds.

The pattern is worked in the round and consists of a total of 40 easy-to-follow crochet rounds.
Instructions are written in English using US crochet terminology

Pattern instructions

Scrap yarn is a great way to use up leftover bits of yarn to make something useful. You can use it to make blankets, scarves, or other accessories.

If you want to collect scrap yarn, we recommend buying a large box and placing it in a convenient location where you can easily put scraps as they come in. You may also want to consider keeping a small bowl next to your work desk so that you can toss any scrap pieces into it as soon as they come up. When storing yarn, we recommend keeping it in an airtight plastic bag or container with some silica gel packets (available at any hardware store). This will keep the yarn soft and prevent it from getting tangled or matted down with moisture over time. If possible, we recommend storing your scrap yarn in a cool place with low humidity levels—this will help reduce mold growth on the material over time. The best way to store scrap yarn is simply by keeping it somewhere accessible where you can quickly grab what you need whenever needed but also out of sight when not using it! We recommend keeping all sorts of different colors handy so that they're easy to grab whenever needed.

Scrap yarn is the best kind of yarn to use for any small crochet projects.

Scrap yarn comes from all kinds of places, but it's always the leftover bits from other projects.

Maybe you had some extra yarn left over when you were making a sweater, or maybe your mom knitted a scarf and only used half the skein. Or maybe you bought a few balls of yarn at your local craft store, but when you got home, you realized that they were too small to make anything useful with them—but not too small to try out a new pattern!

And what's more fun than using up scraps?

Making something new out of them! You can make blankets for birthdays or holidays, for charity donations for hospitals—whatever you want!

The best part about scrap yarn is that each blanket will have its own personality depending on where it came from and who made it. It'll be like having an heirloom blanket that belonged to someone special…except even better because YOU made it!
