Looking for a free flower granny square blanket African patchwork afghan pattern?
The African Flowers Patchwork is a large, vibrant crochet afghan that celebrates the beauty of my homeland, South Africa. This blanket features original flower squares I’ve designed, each inspired by the unique blooms found across our landscape. The finished afghan includes eight different flower granny squares, four large and four small, each with its own distinctive style. Creating this design was a heartfelt tribute to the stunning natural beauty that surrounds us here every day.

Nature has always been my greatest inspiration when designing any crochet blanket pattern, and the endless variety of colors found outdoors has encouraged me to capture the unique beauty of each flower. This vibrant afghan is a bold celebration of color, don't hesitate to use your favorite shades to make this a true heirloom piece.

This floral blanket combines both large granny squares and small flower squares, making it not only visually rich but also a perfect yarn stash buster. It’s ideal for using leftover yarn, allowing each square to be as unique as the blooms that inspired them.
The blanket is generously sized, so choose a yarn that you enjoy working with, something accessible and comfortable in your hands. I always design with versatility in mind, making my patterns adaptable to a wide range of yarn types and brands, so everyone can enjoy the creative process without being limited by specific materials.
You’ll be making lots of squares, so pick a yarn and hook combination that feels just right for you. This crochet blanket pattern doesn't include a color chart, giving you full freedom to choose your own palette.
So be bold, be colorful, and most importantly, have fun with it.

Remember, making a large blanket is a journey, not a race. Enjoy every stitch of your large granny squares and every detail of your small flower squares. Each finished square is an achievement, I love to see your work, share your progress, tag me in your creations, and let’s celebrate your work together!
I love crocheting granny squares during the warmer months, and as fall approaches, I start assembling the blanket. That way, it's ready to keep you warm and cozy when winter rolls in.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skills Required:
- Working in the round
- Changing yarn colors
- Finishing off rows properly
- Basic understanding of stitch structure and placement
This pattern assumes a basic familiarity with granny squares and working in the round. You’ll be managing multiple colors, weaving in ends, and ensuring consistent tension across all blocks.

Techniques Used:
- Each square (both large and small flower squares) is worked in the round.
- Make sure each square ends with the correct stitch count per side — this will make joining them much easier.
- Try to weave in ends as you go. With lots of color changes, end management becomes a major part of the process. (Unless you love spending a full day tidying yarn tails!)
- Keep yarn weight and hook size consistent to ensure all your squares line up properly.
- Tension matters – not critical for gauge, but critical for uniformity.
Choosing Yarn & Colors for Your Free Flower Granny Square Blanket
Pick your favorite colors! This pattern is all about bold, bright, floral expression. There’s no color chart – you have complete creative freedom.
Suggested Yarn:
- Weight: DK (Double Knit), Category 3–4
- Fiber: Acrylic, cotton, wool – up to your preference
- Hook size: 3.5–4.5mm recommended
In the sample blanket, I used 100% Cotton yarn (approx. 130 yds / 119m per 50g skein), totaling around 50 skeins for the entire afghan.
Tip: You don’t have to use cotton. This is a great stash buster pattern, so use what you love. Just keep yarn weight and texture consistent across your blocks.
Yarn Substitution Tips:
- Cotton can be pricey for large projects—don’t feel limited.
- Any lightweight DK yarn will do just fine.
- A thinner yarn + smaller hook = smaller blanket
- A thicker yarn + larger hook = bigger blanket
I personally prefer lightweight yarns, they keep the blanket soft, drapey, and not too heavy.
Tips for Working in Ends
Each row in your flower squares can be a new color this means lots of yarn ends.
End Management Tips:
- Weave as you go to avoid dealing with dozens of loose tails later.
- Leave a long tail when finishing a row, and weave it under the beginning stitch of the next row.
- Pull it slightly tight, then trim the tail for a neat finish.
Final Notes on Tension and Assembly
- Stick to the same hook size and yarn weight for all your squares.
- Doublecheck your stitch count on each square’s side—this ensures simple, clean joins.
- All blocks are worked in the round, and assembly will be easier if sizes match up properly.
Pattern Terminology:
- Written in Standard US Crochet Terms
- Downloadable version includes stitch diagrams and visual aids
- Not a full step-by-step tutorial, but suitable for confident crocheters ready for a fun challenge
By following these guidelines and selecting materials you love, you'll be ready to create a beautiful, personalized flower granny square crochet blanket pattern that's as fun to make as it is to use.
