Modern African Sun round crochet sling bag pattern
Make this modern round crochet tote bag in your favorite crochet yarn colors, and you will be set for summer getaways, lunch dates with friends, or even just running errands around town.
Warmer weather calls for lightweight, weather friendly crochet projects and nothing beats the heat like making yourself a durable round crochet shoulder circle bag.
The crocheted round circle bag features a modern african sun decal in the center of the bag, the panels are crocheted in the round and woven together with the straps. Patterns include easy instructions, with step by step photos. This unique tote bag is made up of beautiful crochet stitches, is quick to make and a great pattern to have in your collection.
Who doesn't love a quick crochet project that turns out to look like it took way more time than it actually did?
Well, this crochet tote bag is the perfect project for anyone looking to make stunning artwork of a crochet bag for yourself or even as gifts for friends or family, and it's so versatile that you can make it in any color or gender. I love a good-sized crochet bag, and round circle bags are right at the top of my list.
The pouch bag pattern is a great option for crocheters who want to try their hand at some new crocheting techniques and stitches. Any crochet tote bag is a great project for warm weather as no one wants to work on a thick blanket when the sun is shining down. The pattern is made up from 3 different small-sized panels, and the entire bag does not use a large amount of yarn, so this crochet project can easily be packed into a handy carry bag for when you need some short-term crocheting for a road trip or day visit.
I love bright-colored crochet yarn, and craft cotton makes a durable crochet bag that can last a lifetime. The front post and back post crochet stitches used for making the African sun panel end up into s strong tight fabric, so the awkward stretching of standard crochet bags, is actually way less, with thick crochet bag pattern. It can easily be lined in either pattern or single colored lining, for a more finishes look and feel, and can be closed with either a strong zipper or some toggle buttons.

Round circle bags are always a winner at any craft market fair
Whether you're planning on taking this bag to the craft market or using it for yourself, you'll be able to whip one of these up in no time, the pattern works up in a flash and one can make up to two bags a day, depending on your crochet speed. You won't believe how easy making this crochet pouch bag really is. The round tote bag straps can be easily altered to your required length, and the pattern also includes guidance on strap lengths, to assist you in getting the right shoulder strap lengths for your requirements.
Selecting your colors for the Round Crochet Tote Bag
I Used 3 colors of Craft Cotton yarn to make My African Sun round tote bags.
Yarn length used for each color was as follow :
- Color 1 : 166 m / 180 yards
- Color 2 : 83 m / 90 yards
- Color 3 : 249 m / 270 yrds
First is the lightest color yarn which will be your center color, and create the center of the African Sun panel, it should be visibly different from the next darker color so that you have enough contrast between light and dark for the African Sun pattern to visually show, you will need two balls of this, which is approximately 166 meters or 180 yards of light-colored cotton yarns when using a 4.5mm crochet hook.
For the next color, it is best to use a color tone that is between the lightest and darkest colors you selected, this will create a contrasting shadow between the sun rays of this African Sun Tote Bag. This color joins in towards the center of the pattern, and not a lot of yarn is used in this color, which is approximately 83 meters or 91 yards of mid-colored cotton yarn when using a 4.5mm crochet hook
The last color can be a much darker color for your main body of the bag, which will be the coloring between the rays, the outer rounds of the bag, and the outer layer of the strap, This color will be the main color that you use for joining the crochet panels together, you will need approximately 166 meters or 180 yards of dark colored cotton yarn when using a 4.5mm crochet hook.
Construction of a Round Pouch Crochet Tote Bag
This Circle tote crochet bag consists of 3 main parts, the front tote round panel, the back tote round panel, and of course the strap.
You have the option to have the sun crochet motif on both the front and the back of the bag, to do this you repeat the Sun Motif , Panel A, twice, this is a great option if you have a zipper or button closing the top of your crochet bag, as you don't have a distinctive front or back of the bag and can be carried with any side facing front.
If you wish to only have the Sun motif on the front of the bag, you complete panel A and Panel B, as panel B, is a plain base panel with no motif, your bag will then have a district front and back side to the finished bag.
The Strap also doubles as the base of the bag, so if you wish to have a bag with a wide base you can always make your strap wider by adding some additional rows, but note that when adding width to your strap and base you are also adding width to the top of the bag, so the opening of the bag will also be wider.
After completing the panels and the strap, they are easily joined into the finished crochet bag. Please see joining the round crochet bag below for more detailed instructions on this.

- Suggested yarn for crochet tote bag pattern.
- DK Cotton, Bamboo, or Nylon Fibre content yarn
- Yarn Length required : +- 420m/460 yards
- Recommended Crochet hook size: 4mm or 4.5 mm
For the pattern example of this circle crochet bag pattern, I used Craft Cotton yarn, which has a tight spun, and does not unravel easily, which makes your bag sturdy and strong. The Craft yarn used had a recommended crochet hook of 4.5mm , but I chose to use a 4mm crochet hook, as I prefer my crochet bags finished project to the tightly woven and as little holes as possible, and by slightly making my crochet hook smaller, I achieve a durable finished fabric.
To finish each bag I used about +- 420m/460 yards of craft cotton yarn, and the average size of the finished bags pouches is 25cm x 25 cm / or 10 x 10 inches.Do note that if you select a heavier yarn, and a large crochet hook, your finished bag size will be larger as your gauge will be larger. This bag can work in chunky yarn, but please consider as you go up in weight and width of yarn it adds to the weight of your finished project, so if you don't want to hae a workout every time you pick up your bag, consider a workable medium weight yarn.
Finished Measurements using a 4mm crochet hook and craft cotton yarn
- Circle crochet pouch from side to side: 25 cm
- Circle crochet pouch from top to bottom: 25 cm
- Straps from top to bottom: 60 cm
This free online version has one strap length for the bag which is a standard shoulder length of 70-90cm / 28-35 inches, the downloadable pattern has additional details on resizing straps for longer and shorter straps.

skip over / dont work into allocated stitches or chain spaces
The space left from any amount of chains worked between stitches
chain : most crochet projects start off with a chain, either a chain into a magic ring for rounds or a base or foundation chain for a rowed crochet project, chain can also mean chains within a pattern row, where either a single chain is worked or a number of chains is crocheted, between stitches.
Repeat either stitch pattern or stitches at an allocated time as mentioned in the pattern
repeat the instructions following the single asterisk as directed
is normally applied in the small space between two stitches rather than crocheting through crochet loops, completed stitch is normally a little shorter than a normal crochet stitch, and the overall spaces between stitches become more open.
