How to Create a Crochet Wave Pattern with Basic Stitches

Making waves with standard crochet stitches
Stouto Crochet Tutorial

Create a colourful crochet wave pattern using standard crochet stitches of different heights. By combining single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet stitches, you can create a textured fabric with a flowing wave effect.

Crochet Wave Stitch Pattern Tutorial

This crochet wave stitch example comes from a stitch sampler project by Linda Slabbert of Stouto Creative Crochet. It demonstrates how familiar crochet stitches can be arranged into repeating sequences to create decorative rows of colour and texture.

The technique can be adapted for crochet blankets, afghans, scarves, and stitch sampler projects. You can work the wave pattern in a single colour or change colours between rows to highlight the different stitch sequences.

Understanding the Crochet Wave Stitch

A crochet wave stitch pattern uses a combination of short and tall stitches to create changes in the height of the fabric. Shorter stitches form the lower sections, while taller stitches create raised sections that contribute to the wave effect.

Common stitches used in wave patterns include:

  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Treble crochet (tr)

The order of these stitches determines the shape and appearance of the pattern. Some wave patterns use increases and decreases to form distinct peaks and valleys. This stitch-sampler variation uses alternating stitch sequences and a shell-style foundation, as shown in the accompanying photograph and stitch diagram.

Crochet Wave Stitch Sample and Diagram

The photograph shows the finished stitch sample, while the diagram provides a visual reference for the stitch placement and row sequence.

Use both references together when following the instructions. The diagram is particularly useful for seeing how the stitches relate to one another across the rows and how the wave pattern develops from its foundation.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

.

  • Yarn: DK or light worsted yarn.
  • Hook: Choose a hook suitable for your yarn and desired fabric.
  • Colours: Use several contrasting colours to emphasise the pattern, or work in one colour for a more subtle texture.
  • Terminology: The written instructions below use US crochet terminology.
  • Pattern construction: A shell-style foundation followed by alternating rows of different stitch heights.

For a stitch sampler, work the wave section over the required width of your project. If you intend to make a complete blanket, first establish the foundation stitch count from the chart and test the repeat in a small swatch.

TERMINOLOGY DECODED

US vs. UK Stitch Translation Matrix

Never let terminology ruin a project. In US terms, stitches are named after the yarn overs; in UK terms, stitches are named after the loops on your hook.

Horizontal Scroll Supported
Symbol / Chart Stitch Name UK Equivalent Quick Method
sl st Slip Stitch slip stitch (sl st)

1. Insert hook into the stitch or space.
2. Yarn over and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook (one motion).
3. Used to join rounds or move without height.

1. Insert hook into the next stitch.
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
3. Yarn over and pull through both loops. → 1 sc complete.

1. Yarn over.
2. Insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops).
3. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

dc Double Crochet treble crochet (tr)

1. Yarn over.
2. Insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops).
3. Yarn over and pull through first 2 loops (2 remain).
4. Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.

1. Yarn over twice.
2. Insert hook in stitch, pull up loop (4 loops).
3. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (3 remain).
4. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 remain).
5. Yarn over, pull through last 2 loops.

1. Make a slip knot on the hook.
2. Yarn over (yo).
3. Pull yarn through the loop on the hook. → 1 ch made.

1) Keep one working loop on the hook.
2) Create new loops with yarn overs and pulls.
3) Maintain even tension for consistent loops.

Tips for Working the Wave Stitch

Keep track of your stitch placement

The wave effect depends on the position and height of each stitch. Refer to the chart regularly to ensure that the sequence remains aligned with the previous row.

Use colour changes to highlight the waves

Contrasting colours make it easier to distinguish the individual rows and see how the stitch heights create texture. Changing colour after each row or pair of rows can give the finished fabric a striped appearance.

Check your stitch count

Count your stitches at the end of each row and compare your work with the foundation layout. Do not assume that every wave pattern uses the same multiple, as different designs may include shell motifs, skipped stitches, increases, or decreases.

Make a swatch before starting a blanket

A small sample lets you check the fabric width, drape, stitch alignment, and colour arrangement before committing to a larger project.

Check your crochet terminology

This tutorial uses US stitch abbreviations. If you normally follow UK crochet terminology, remember that a US single crochet (sc) is a UK double crochet (dc), a US half double crochet (hdc) is a UK half treble crochet (htr), and a US double crochet (dc) is a UK treble crochet (tr). A US treble crochet (tr) is a UK double treble crochet (dtr).

Using the Wave Stitch in a Crochet Blanket

Wave stitches can be used for an entire blanket or incorporated into a sampler blanket alongside other stitch patterns

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crochet wave stitch?

A crochet wave stitch is a pattern created by combining crochet stitches of different heights to produce a flowing, wave-like texture. Depending on the design, waves can be formed using alternating stitch heights, increases and decreases, or combinations of both.

Which crochet stitches are used to make waves?

Common stitches include single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), and treble crochet (tr) in US terminology. Combining these stitches in a repeating sequence creates changes in height across the row.

Is the crochet wave stitch suitable for beginners?

Yes. Basic wave stitches can be suitable for beginners who know how to work the fundamental crochet stitches. More complex variations may require careful stitch counting and attention to the pattern repeat.

Can I use the crochet wave stitch for a blanket?

Yes. Wave stitches are popular for crochet blankets, afghans, scarves, and other projects. Before starting a large blanket, make a small swatch to check the stitch repeat, finished width, and fabric drape.

How do I follow a crochet wave stitch diagram?

Read the stitch diagram row by row, checking the stitch symbols and their positions relative to the previous row. Compare the chart with the written instructions and finished sample to understand how the stitches are arranged.

Why does my crochet wave pattern not look wavy?

Your waves may look uneven if stitches are worked into the wrong positions, the stitch count changes unexpectedly, or the sequence is repeated incorrectly. Check the chart, count your stitches at the end of each row, and make sure you are using the correct stitch heights.

Do I need to change colours for a crochet wave stitch?

No. You can work the pattern in one colour or change colours between rows. Contrasting colours make the wave texture easier to see and create a decorative striped effect.

What is the difference between US and UK crochet stitch terminology?

US and UK terminology use different names for several stitches. For example, a US single crochet (sc) is called a double crochet (dc) in UK terminology, while a US double crochet (dc) is called a treble crochet (tr) in UK terminology. Always check which system your pattern uses.

Can I adjust the width of a crochet wave blanket?

Yes, but you must follow the repeat and foundation requirements of the particular pattern. Establish the stitch multiple and any additional edge stitches before changing the width. Work a swatch first to estimate the finished dimensions.

Can I use this wave stitch in a crochet stitch sampler?

Yes. A wave stitch section can add colour and texture to a crochet stitch sampler alongside other stitch patterns. Work the section to the required height and follow the chart to maintain the intended stitch sequence.
