Treble Crochet Stitch (TR) — Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

The treble crochet stitch (TR), sometimes called triple crochet, is one of the tallest basic crochet stitches. It creates a soft, open fabric that’s ideal for lightweight garments, shawls, and decorative patterns. If you’re looking to add height and airy texture to your crochet projects, the TR stitch is the perfect choice.

What Is a Treble Crochet Stitch?

The treble crochet stitch, abbreviated tr, is taller than the double crochet stitch and gives your fabric a lacy, flowing look. Because it uses extra yarn overs, it’s great for stitches that need height, such as shells, fans, and lace motifs.

In UK crochet terms, the treble crochet (tr) is called a double treble crochet (dtr) stitch.

Abbreviation

  • US - Treble Crochet : tr
  • UK - double treble crochet : dtr
  • AFR- dubble slag steek / driedubblehekel: dsl

Practice Row Example

To practice, try this simple exercise:

  1. Chain 16 (this gives you 13 working stitches plus 3 for turning).
  2. Yarn over twice and insert your hook into the fifth chain from the hook.
  3. Complete one treble crochet stitch.
  4. Continue making TR stitches across the row (you’ll have 12 stitches).
  5. Chain 4 and turn your work to begin the next row.

Repeat this to create a swatch,, you’ll notice the fabric is much taller and airier than with double crochet stitches.
