Beginner Guide to the C2C Crochet Technique

Start with a Foundation:
Begin by making a small foundation of chains. For the typical C2C, you'll start with 6 chains (but some patterns may vary).
In the first row, you'll work your stitches into the chain to create the first block of the piece.
Increasing Rows:
C2C crochet is worked in blocks (usually made up of double crochets in the U.S., or treble crochets in the UK).
The idea is to create a series of blocks that form the diagonal line. For each new row, you add one more block to increase the width of your piece.
Each row will have an extra block added to the end until you reach the desired size.
Turning the Work:
After you have reached the desired width, you start decreasing. To do this, you turn your work and decrease the number of blocks per row, reducing the width of the piece as you go back toward the opposite corner.
Finishing:
Once you’ve completed the C2C section and your piece is the desired size, you can finish off your project with a border if desired. This step is optional but helps to give the piece a polished look.
Basic C2C Stitch Pattern:
In C2C, each "block" is made up of 3 double crochet (US) stitches.
To make a C2C block:
Start by chaining 6 stitches.
In the 4th chain from the hook, make 3 double crochets (this forms the first block).
Repeat the process to create more blocks in each row.
To increase:
On each new row, start by chaining 6, and work the same way (3 double crochets in each chain space).
To decrease:
Turn your work and skip the last block of the previous row.
Continue working blocks in the same way, but reduce one block on each row.
Graphs and C2C:
C2C crochet is especially popular when working with graphs, where you follow a pixel-like image to create detailed designs. These designs can be used for blankets, pillows, and more. The idea is to work the blocks in colors according to the graph.
Example: C2C Blanket Pattern (Basic)
Row 1: Chain 6. Work 3 double crochets into the 4th chain from the hook.
Row 2: Chain 6. Work 3 double crochets in each chain space across.
Continue: Add more rows, each time adding an additional block at the end.
Decreasing: Once you reach the desired size, turn your work, and reduce the number of blocks each row.
