Step-by-Step Instructions (US Terms)
Follow these simple steps to crochet the Granny Stitch:
1. Start with a magic ring or a small chain circle.
2. Work 3 double crochets (DC) into the center — this forms your first cluster.
3. Chain 1 (or chain 2 for corners).
4. Work another 3 DC into the same center space to form the second cluster.
5. Continue making 3 DC clusters, separated by chain spaces, around the ring or foundation chain.
6. Join with a slip stitch to complete the round.
And just like that, you’ve made your first round of a classic granny square!
UK Equivalent Instructions
If you’re using UK crochet terminology, simply replace all DC (double crochet) stitches with TR (treble crochet).
Corners are formed by chaining 2–3 stitches between clusters — depending on how open you want the square to look.
