Gazania : Large Granny Square Pattern

The Gazania Large Granny Square Pattern is a true showstopper. Inspired by the bright and vivid Gazania flower, this floral crochet square bursts with texture and character. I’ve used this versatile 12-petal flower motif in several of my designs, including the popular Gazania Tote Bag, but today we’ll focus on this bold and beautiful blanket square.

About This Pattern

About the Gazania Flower Square

This large granny square pattern is worked in the round and combines classic crochet stitches with textured front-post stitches for a raised, petal-like effect. The square measures generously and makes a stunning feature piece whether used in a blanket, a bag, or even a garment.

Because Gazanias are naturally vivid, don’t be afraid to experiment with color. Bold contrasts really make this square shine, but it also looks beautiful in softer palettes for a more subtle floral design.

This makes the Gazania Square flexible for many projects – from lightweight summer throws to cozy winter afghans.

Perfect For:

  • Crochet afghans & throws
  • Colorful stash-busting projects
  • Unique floral squares for bags, garments & pillows

FAQs About Large Granny Square Patterns

What is a large granny square pattern?

A large granny square pattern is an oversized crochet square that can be used on its own as a centerpiece or joined with other squares to make blankets, bags, and more. Unlike small motifs, large squares usually feature multiple rounds and can include textured or floral designs, like the Gazania.

How big should a large granny square be?

Most large granny squares measure between **8 and 12 inches (20–30 cm)** across. The Gazania Flower Square in this pattern measures **11 x 11 inches** when made with DK yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

What can I make with a large granny square?

Large granny squares are versatile! You can use them to create:

  • Crochet afghans and throws
  • Tote bags and market bags
  • Pillow covers
  • Garments like cardigans or ponchos
  • Wall hangings and home décor

What yarn works best for a large granny square?

DK / Light Worsted yarn is commonly used, but you can make a large granny square in any yarn weight. Just remember: lighter yarn = smaller squares, heavier yarn = bigger squares.

Is this large granny square pattern beginner-friendly?

Yes! While the Gazania uses textured stitches like front-post crochet, the step-by-step instructions make it beginner-friendly. Confident beginners can absolutely give it a try.
