Choosing Yarn:

What You Need to Know Mixing yarn types can give your poncho a modern twist, but here are a few golden rules to follow:

  • Use yarns of the same weight (Category 3 or 4 – Medium, Worsted, Aran, Afghan).
  • Don’t switch hook sizes mid-project.
  • If in doubt, stick to one brand/type that recommends a 5mm hook

Make a crochet poncho pattern size swatch

  1. Make a 10-stitch chain.
  2. Work 3–5 rows of double crochet in each yarn type.
  3. Compare swatches: if they align in size, you're good to go!
