Front Post Single Crochet Stitch (FPSC) — Step-by-Step Guide

The Front Post Single Crochet stitch (FPSC) is a textured variation of the single crochet. Instead of working into the top loops of a stitch, you crochet around the front of the post of the stitch below. This creates a raised ridge on the front of your fabric, adding dimension and texture.

FPSC is ideal for ribbing, cables, and decorative textures in blankets, hats, scarves, and borders.

What Is a Front Post Single Crochet Stitch?

The Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC):

Works like a normal single crochet but inserts the hook around the post of the stitch below instead of the top loops.

Creates a raised ridge on the surface of your work.

In UK terms, this is called Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Inserting the hook into the top loops instead of around the post.
  • Tight loops, keep a relaxed, even tension for smooth ridges.
  • Losing stitch count, each FPSC counts as one stitch in your row.

Best Uses for FPSC

  • Ribbed edges for hats, sleeves, and cuffs
  • Raised textures in blankets and throws
  • Decorative cables and vertical stripes.

Abbreviation

  • US - Front Post Single Crochet : fpsc
  • UK - Front post double crochet : fpdc
  • AFR- Voorste Kortbeen(tjies) / Voor Stam Kortbeen(tjies) / voorpaal enkelhekel: vbkb / vskb
