Crochet Stitches — Basic Definition & Use

Stitches

A stitch is one complete movement of yarn that forms part of your crochet fabric. Each stitch has a top “V” shape and counts toward your total stitch number in a row or round.

Step-by-step:

1. Identify the top “V” of each stitch — this is where your hook usually enters.
2. Insert your hook under both loops unless the pattern says otherwise (FLO/BLO).
3. Make the stitch required (sc, dc, hdc, etc.).
4. Keep tension even so all stitches are uniform in size.
5. Count your stitches at the end of each row to prevent accidental increases or decreases.

Abbreviation

  • US - Stitches : sts
  • UK - stitches : sts
  • AFR- Steke: sts
