Double Crochet Decrease (dc tog) — Step-by-Step Guide

The Double Crochet Decrease (dc tog) is used to reduce the number of stitches in your row, making shaping for hats, garments, amigurumi, and other projects easy.

A single dc decrease works by combining two double crochet stitches into one, creating a smooth, slanted decrease.

Best Uses for dc Decrease

  • Shaping hats and beanies
  • Amigurumi shaping (arms, legs, head)
  • Decreasing stitch count in garments.

Tips

  • Keep tension even to avoid a bulky decrease.
  • Count stitches carefully, each decrease counts as one stitch.
  • Practice the slanted decrease on a small swatch first.

Abbreviation

  • US - DC decreases / DcTog : dctog
  • UK - treble crochet together : trtog
  • AFR- Verminder: vermin

2. Yarn over, insert into stitch B, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops — now two partial DCs on hook.
3. Yarn over, pull through all remaining loops — decrease complete.
