What do you need to make each crochet flower square?
Making each crochet flower square is fun and easy, and with eight different crochet squares to choose from you will have a beautiful crochet flower square in no time! Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you will need to create the crochet flower squares:

Materials to use for your granny flower squares :
Crochet hook: Use the appropriate crochet hook size recommended for your selected yarn
Scissors and Yarn needle: For working in the end - if you are using a different color per round - you will have a ‘few’ tails to work in - I do recommend working in your tails as you go, especially on crochet flower squares.
Yarn: This blanket pattern example was made using double knit cotton yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook, and crochet square sizes and example blanket size is based on the above-mentioned yarn weight and crochet hook.

Things to consider when choosing yarn for granny flower squares:
Choosing colors for your crochet flower square blanket
Each crochet flower has a base color which in worked around the outer stitches of the flower to create the final square, you can select a single base color to complete each square with and have a blanket where your flowers stand out boldly against a one-color background, or you can choose to make each square a different color. Once all your flower squares are complete, use a yarn needle to sew the crochet squares together as shown in the crochet square joining instructions then simply weave in the joining ends.
Consider the color and finish of your selected yarn as yarn comes in various colors and finishes, from matte to shiny, it is also important, especially in bigger projects like afghans, lapghans, blankets, and throws that you select a yarn that is freely available as you don't want to run out of your favorite color. When choosing colors, select colors you like, consider the effect you're going for in your project, but use colors you like or prefer, as this will always help to complete a project. To me personally, if I am not 100% set on a color, I struggle to complete a project.
The colors used for each crochet flower is listed within the pattern.

Take note of your Yarn Weight
Make sure to pick a yarn weight that suits the design and look you want for your crochet squares. Common weights for squares are worsted weight (medium) and DK (lightweight). Choose a fiber based on your intended use like warmth, softness, and durability, see notes below of different types of yarn fiber types which are great for crocheting flower squares.
What types of crochet yarn are best for crochet flower squares?
When it comes to choosing yarn for crochet squares, you have several options depending on the desired texture, weight, and durability.

Here are some popular types of crochet yarns that work great for crochet flower squares:
Acrylic Yarn is affordable, durable, and easy to care for (machine washable). It's widely available and comes in a range of colors, acrylic yarn is best for beginners, as it's easy to work with and maintain. If you are making large stash-busting blankets like this flower crochet blanket in large double bed sizes on a budget I highly recommend your choice of favorite Acrylic yarn brand.
Cotton Yarn is also a great choice when making crochet flower afghans. Cotton yarn is soft and breathable, it has a natural texture that’s great for crochet projects and works well for crochet squares. I prefer cotton yarn, but note that when you select cotton yarn for a blanket, the final project might be more weighted than your standard acrylic yarn project.
Wool Yarn is also soft, carries a natural warmth, has natural elasticity and wool can give your squares a nice, cozy texture and is an excellent yarn choice in you stay in a colder climate with cooler weather. Wool yarn is best for warm blankets, throws, and afghans but can be on the higher price end and price should be considered when making a large afghan and this blanket uses a large amount of yarn.
Blended Yarns consist of a mix of fibers, usually wool with acrylic or nylon, offering the best of both worlds in terms of softness, durability, and washability, this is a good option for creating large crochet blankets.
Fingering Weight Yarn and Sport Weight Yarn is also an option for creating crochet flower squares, it can be very thin and lightweight, making it perfect for delicate and intricate flower squares, which works great for lacy and intricate designs. Do take note that you will have to use a way smaller crochet hook, and your crochet square size will differ from that which is mentioned in the pattern, so if you wish to use a lighter-weight yarn please take note of the residing notes below so you can adjust the number of squares you will need accordingly.
Bulky or Chunky Yarn is thick and works up quickly. This is great for making larger crochet flower squares or if you wish to complete a crochet flower blanket quickly. Do take note that you will have to use a way bigger crochet hook, and your crochet square size will differ from that which is mentioned in the pattern, so if you wish to use a heavier or more bulky yarn please take note of the residing notes below so you can adjust the amount of squares you will need accordingly.

Resizing a Flower Crochet Blanket
Size of each granny square:
The Crochet Flower squares are 11 inches (29 - 30 cm) in width, using a 3.5mm crochet hook, but this can vary depending on the yarn and hook size you're using. You can adjust the size based on your own yarn choice.
Number of squares needed:
To calculate the number of squares for the width, divide the width of the blanket by the size of your granny square.
Example: For a blanket that's 60 inches wide and each square is 11 inches, you would need 6 squares across (60 ÷ 11 = 5.4).
To calculate the number of squares for the length, divide the length of the blanket by the size of your granny square.
Example: For a blanket that's 72 inches long and each square is 11 inches, you would need 7 squares down (72 ÷ 11 = 6.5).
So for a 60 x 72-inch blanket with 11-inch squares, you’d need 6 squares across by 7 squares down, totaling 42 squares (6 x 7 = 42).
Flowers: Since each granny square will have one flower in the center, and you have 8 flower available in this pattern, you can repeat each flower pattern 8 times, and then pick your two favorite flowers and make 2 more of them to get to 42 squares ( 5 x 8 + 2 = 42 ) or you can use only the flower patterns you prefer or like , For example you like 6 of the 8 flowers more than others you can then make repeat 6 squares 7 times to get to 42 squares ( 6 x 7 = 42 squares)
If you're making larger or smaller squares, adjust the number of squares and flowers accordingly.
