Pattern Instructions
Pattern Notes
- This crochet poncho pattern is written using standard US crochet terminology.
- The poncho is constructed using large rectangular panels.
- Panel 1 is worked first as one large rectangle.
- Once Panel 1 is complete, the rectangle is folded over and partially joined to form:
- the first shoulder section
- and the neck opening on either the left or right side.
- Panel 2 is then worked directly onto the top edge of Panel 1 to create the second shoulder section and complete the poncho shape.
- The construction creates a relaxed oversized drape with minimal shaping.
- Stitch patterns repeat over multiples of 12 stitches.
- Always use an uneven number of stitch repeats and add 3 extra starting chains.
- Self-striping yarn is highly recommended as it highlights the textured stitch sections beautifully.
- This pattern works well with:
- self-striping yarn
- variegated yarn
- solid colors
- scrap yarn projects using similar yarn weights.
- Maintain the same yarn weight and crochet hook size throughout the project for best results.
- Lightweight yarns create a softer flowing poncho while heavier yarns create a warmer oversized garment.
- The poncho can easily be resized by adjusting the starting chain length.
- Always crochet a gauge swatch before beginning your project.
- Blocking is optional but recommended for improved drape and stitch definition

Crochet Poncho Pattern Features
- Floral-inspired textured stitches
- V-stitches
- Double crochet sections
- Relaxed oversized drape
- Seam construction with only two joined sections
- Great for variegated and self-striping yarns

How to Measure Yourself for a Crochet Poncho
Getting the correct measurements for your crochet poncho will help ensure a comfortable fit and beautiful drape.
Measure Desired Poncho Arm Length
Using a soft measuring tape:
- A - Measure from the top of your shoulder down to your hand, where you would like the poncho to end.
- Common lengths:
- Hip length
- Mid-thigh
- Full arm length
This measurement determines the overall panel length.
Measure Desired Poncho Length
Using a soft measuring tape:
- C - Measure from the top of your shoulder down to where you would like the poncho to end.
- Common lengths:
- Hip length
- Mid-thigh
- Knee length
This measurement determines the overall panel length.
Measure Shoulder Width
- B Back - Measure across the back from one shoulder edge to the other.
- This helps determine:
- Neck opening placement
- Overall drape and fit
Measure Bust or Chest Circumference
- B Front - Measure around the fullest part of the bust or chest while keeping the tape comfortably loose.
- Ponchos are designed with positive ease, so:
- Add extra room for layering and comfortable movement.
- Oversized ponchos generally drape best.
Determine Desired Fit
Choose how you would like your poncho to fit:
- Relaxed and oversized
- Standard fit
- Extra draped and flowy
The larger the panel dimensions, the more dramatic the drape will be.
Quick Sizing Tips

Construction Overview
Construction Overview
This crochet poncho is worked in two large rectangular panels. Once both panels are completed, they are joined together using simple seam construction to create the poncho shape.
The stitch flow transitions gradually between textured sections, giving the poncho a balanced drape and layered appearance without complicated shaping.

How to Assemble the Crochet Poncho
Step 1 : Complete the Panels
- Work Panel A to the required length following the pattern instructions.
- Use the sizing guide to confirm your desired finished size before proceeding.
- Repeat the process to complete Panel B.
Step 2 : Fold Panel A
- Place Panel A on a flat surface.
- Fold the panel in half so it becomes half of its original length.
Step 3 : Join Panel A
Join the two short sides of the folded Panel A together.
This forms the main body structure of the poncho.
Step 4 : Shape the Shoulder
Rotate the joined Panel A at approximately a 45-degree angle.
Step 5 : Add Panel B
- Fold Panel B and position it to form the second shoulder section.
- Join Panel B to both the front and back of the folded Panel A.
Step 6 : Finish the Poncho
Once all joins are complete, the poncho structure is finished.
You can now:
- Weave in all loose ends
- Add optional fringe or edging
- Block the garment if desired
- Add any finishing decorative touches

Easy steps for completing this poncho
Pattern Instructions (A)
Complete the large flat rectangle panel.
Follow first set of written crochet instructions marked as Pattern instructions (A)
This will make a flat large rectangle,
- Panel Measurements
- A(a) = Longest panel length
- A(b) = Shortest side length
Please see the sizing chart for sizing adjustments.
Section B
Once Panel A is complete,
- Measure / determine the neck with you require (B)b,
- Deduct your required neck width from the center fold outwards.
- Fold the rectangle in half
- Determine the neck opening width B(b),
- Deduct the neck width from the center of rectangle A
- Count stitches from outwards to where you need to start the neck.
- Remember stitch repeat is uneven sets of 12 + 2, so ensure you have enough stitches to complete your pattern repeat.
- Mark your stitches with a stitch marker, this will help you with your initial rows.
- Continue working along section B(a)
Measure the opening for the neck and determine where to start with shoulder
Add shoulder panel to body panel
Join a new yarn with slip stitch, and 1sc into space the first space after determining your neck width, this will now count as your first dc stitch when following along with the pattern.
If resizing continues along the pattern rows until you have reached your required length, remember the uneven x 12 stitch pattern repeat.
Section C
Follow: Pattern Instructions (B)
This forms the adjacent shoulder section and completes the poncho structure.
