Beginner’s Guide to the Front Post Treble Crochet Stitch (US: FP TR, UK: FP DTR)

The front post treble crochet stitch is a tall, textured stitch that creates pronounced raised vertical ridges on your crochet fabric.

In US terminology, it is called FP TR, while in the UK it is referred to as FP DTR (Front Post Double Treble). Unlike standard treble crochet, which is worked into the top loops of stitches, the FP TR is worked around the post of the stitch from the previous row.

This technique is often used in basket weave patterns, cables, and other textured designs to create dramatic 3D effects.

For beginners, FP TR is a powerful way to add height and dimension to projects while exploring advanced textured techniques.

Beginner Tips

  1. Maintain even tension to ensure raised posts are uniform in height.
  2. Work slowly when inserting your hook around the post to avoid twisting stitches.
  3. Practice alternating FP TR with standard TR rows to see how the texture forms.
  4. Use scrap yarn for swatches to clearly observe the dramatic ridges created.
  5. Combine FP TR with BP TR to experiment with 3D patterns like basket weave or cables.

Common Mistakes

  • Not inserting the hook fully around the post, causing uneven ridges.
  • Pulling loops too tightly, making it difficult to work in the next row.
  • Skipping posts or adding extra posts, disrupting the pattern.
  • Inconsistent tension, resulting in uneven heights.
  • Confusing FP TR with standard TR, flattening the intended texture.

Common Uses

Basket weave patterns and textured afghans.

  • Cables and ribbing in blankets, scarves, and hats.
  • Creating pronounced vertical ridges for visual impact.
  • Combining with BP TR for advanced 3D textures and designs.

Abbreviation

  • US - Front Post Treble Crochet : fptr
  • UK - front post double treble crochet : fpdtr
  • AFR- Voorste Been Dubble Slag Steek / Voor Stam Dubble Slag Steek : vbdsl / vsdsl

Crochet Stitch Method

1. Yarn over twice, insert around post front→back→front.
2. Yarn over, pull up loop (4 loops).
3. Yarn over, pull through 2, yarn over pull through 2, yarn over pull through last 2.

Step by Step

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Work a foundation row of treble crochet (TR / DTR).
  2. Yarn over twice (wrap the yarn around your hook two times).
  3. Insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the stitch from the previous row.
  4. Yarn over and pull up a loop (four loops on the hook).
  5. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops (three loops remaining).
  6. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops (two loops remaining).
  7. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops to complete the FP TR.
  8. Repeat around each stitch post as required.

UK Equivalent: In the UK, this stitch is called Front Post Double Treble (FP DTR). The technique is identical; only the terminology differs.

Practice Swatch Exercise

  • Begin with a foundation row of 6–8 TR stitches.
  • Row 1: Work standard TR across.
  • Row 2: Work FP TR around each stitch post from the previous row.
  • Repeat for 3–4 rows to create tall, raised ridges.
  • Observe how the FP TR creates a dramatic 3D texture compared to FP DC or FP HDC.
  • Tip: Alternate rows of FP TR and BP TR to form a small basket weave swatch for practice.
